Spotter planes from the Cape Cod Ocean Community keep our swimmers safe

With the safety of swimmers a top priority, the Cape Cod Ocean Community organization will sponsor a spotter plane the day of the 35th Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla, set for September 10, 2022 in Provincetown Harbor.

This is the second year this event, sponsored by the Provincetown Community Compact, will use the sweeping arm of the East End shoreline for the 1.2-mile swim after three decades of swimming across the harbor.

Heather Doyle, director of the Cape Cod Ocean Community, states: “As we near the Annual Swim for Life celebration, we want to do our very best towards guarding for human safety.  We generously donated airplane surveillance through the "Eyes in the Sky Program". So, swim inspiring the essence of good health and compassion.” Cape Cod Ocean Community Inc. is a non-profit organization that is working to  implement white shark safety measures through proactive surveillance and communication. The organization places volunteers on the beach with radios that monitor a dedicated frequency that is used by volunteers in the sky to report shark sightings. The program uses a network of commercial and private flights. During the Swim spotter planes will be working directly with the Provincetown Harbormaster on the water.

The Swim starts at 11:00 am at the Breakwater and Harbor Hotels beach. The new shoreline route is an opportunity for those who were unable to swim across the harbor to join the legendary benefit. A parallel Swim will be held at Great Pond in Wellfleet at 8:00 am the morning of the Provincetown event.
